Helping Penguins Thrive: How Active Grow Lighting Supports a Living Habitat

Most of what we do at Active Grow is focused on plants. But we get excited when we have the opportunity to apply our expertise in new environments. At the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens, our lighting is part of a controlled environment designed to support the health and behavior of Magellanic penguins.
Building a Better Environment Indoors
Magellanic penguins are native to the
coastal regions of South America, where natural light plays a role in their
daily rhythms.
Inside the exhibit, that environment
has to be recreated from scratch.
The lighting system was designed to:
- simulate natural daylight
- introduce UV similar to sunlight
- transition smoothly between
active and rest periods - create variation across the
enclosure
This is done using a customized
version of our SG HO 1000W LED Grow Light, tuned specifically for this
application.
Supporting Natural Behavior
Lighting in the exhibit isn’t just there to make the space visible. It plays a role in how the penguins behave.
As the lighting shifts throughout the
day:
- activity levels change
- rest periods become more natural
- the environment feels more stable
and consistent
It’s a controlled system, but the goal
is simple:
make the habitat feel stable and
natural.
Why This Matters
Whether it’s plants or animals, the
principle is the same: light drives response.
When it’s right, systems stay stable.
When it’s not, things drift.

Expanding What Lighting Can Do
Projects like this are the ones we enjoy working on.
It’s not every day you get to apply what we do to something like a penguin habitat, and it pushed us to think differently about how light is used.
In this case, it’s not about output or
efficiency, it’s about creating a space where the penguins can settle into more
natural patterns, even in a fully indoor environment.
